Michael was an internationally recognized sleep researcher, neuroscientist, and passionate artist whose creativity extended far beyond the laboratory. A pioneer in the study of sleep and brain function, he served as Professor Emeritus of Physiology at UCLA, founded WebSciences International in Los Angeles, and was a leader in the field of sleep research for decades. His groundbreaking discoveries advanced the scientific understanding of REM sleep and earned him international recognition.

Alongside his scientific career, Michael was a bold and imaginative, largely self-taught artist. Working in oil paint and sculpture, he created expressive works characterized by strong color, dynamic compositions, and an inventive use of found objects. His art reflected the same curiosity and originality that defined his scientific work, revealing a mind that was equally driven to explore creativity and discovery.

Michael passed away in 2018, leaving behind an enduring legacy in both science and the arts. His paintings and sculptures continue to celebrate the boundless imagination that shaped every aspect of his life.
