Stephen Brophy

Stephen was a self-taught artist, producing a large body of paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures for over fifty years. His work captured scenes from those he remembered from his childhood growing up in the Bronx to the beautiful landscapes, farmlands, and barns of upstate New York.

Stephen’s work often reflected his broad interests whether it was a house he worked on as a builder, a vintage automobile, or portraits of his boys. Later in his career, he turned his attention toward abstraction, which varied from hard-edged geometry to intensely-colored and expressionistic compositions. His work has been exhibited at the Columbia-Greene Community College, Institute of Man and Science in Rensselaerville, New York along with numerous group shows, including the Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, New York in 2013 and 2015.

In addition to his art, Stephen was a master carpenter and antiquities restorer. Many of the houses and buildings he had built and refurbished can be seen in Greene County, Hudson Valley, and throughout the Catskills.

His life not only revolved around his art but also his family and his animals. He was never without at least two dogs and, at various times, cats, chickens, goats, and a donkey.

Stephen leaves behind his wife Jessica, their two sons, along with four more sons and eleven grandchildren from his first marriage.
