Frederick Walters
Fred was a self-taught artist whose creativity flourished throughout his life, finding expression in painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking, and poetry. Raised in Philadelphia's Fishtown neighborhood, Fred developed an early love of art, often skipping school to spend his days exploring the Philadelphia Museum of Art. After graduating from Father Judge High School, he served honorably in the United States Marine Corps before working as a machinist and pursuing a variety of careers.
Following a difficult period in his life, Fred returned to drawing as a source of healing and self-expression. After marrying his second wife and relocating to New Mexico, his artistic journey truly blossomed. As a textile artist for Bluefish Clothing, he specialized in hand block printing on clothing, while also experimenting with larger canvases and developing a distinctive painting style. Over the years, he created at least eighty-five paintings, countless drawings and sketches, mixed media works, and a collection of poetry that reflected his thoughtful and imaginative spirit.
Fred's creativity extended well beyond the studio. He worked as an airbrush artist, enjoyed photography, cultivated award-winning gardens, and generously shared his talents with young people through his work at the Unity Center, where he became a respected mentor and role model. Whether creating art, writing poetry, or nurturing a garden, Fred approached life with curiosity, craftsmanship, and heart.
Fred passed away in 2021, leaving behind a rich and diverse body of work that reflects a lifetime of perseverance, creativity, and artistic exploration.
