Carl Johnson
Carl Johnson was a multi-talented Canadian artist, musician, and writer whose creativity found expression through drawing, painting, guitar, singing, and the written word. Born in Sudbury, Ontario, he later lived in Kitchener-Waterloo, Sarnia, and Niagara Falls. Those who knew Carl in Sarnia and Kitchener-Waterloo fondly remember him playing guitar and singing downtown, sharing his love of music with everyone who stopped to listen.
In 2005, Carl suffered a life-changing stroke that left him unable to play the guitar or sing and forced him to move into long-term care. He also lost the use of his dominant right hand. Refusing to give up his passion for art, Carl taught himself to draw and paint with his left hand. Although nearly all of his artwork and writings created before the stroke were lost, the work he produced afterward continued to demonstrate his remarkable eye for perspective, attention to detail, and unwavering determination.
Carl was known not only for his artistic talents but also for his intelligence, quick wit, and sense of humor. He brought joy to those around him and inspired everyone who witnessed his resilience. His life stands as a testament to the enduring power of creativity and the belief that an artist's spirit can never be taken away.
